I used
Size 50 needles
a worsted weight and a sport weight yarn held together
Gauge isn't really important, and you could use just about any combination of yarns for a variety of looks.
Cast on 4 stitches
Rows 1-30 Knit
Row 31- k1, kfb x2, k1
Row 32- k1, kfb, k2, kfb, k1
Row 33- k2, kfb, k2, kfb,, k2
Row 34- k3, kfb, k2, kfb,, k3
Row 35- k4, kfb, k2, kfb,, k4
Row 36- k5, kfb, k2, kfb,, k5
Row 37- k6, kfb, k2, kfb, k6
Row 38- k7, kfb, k2, kfb, k7
Row 39- k8, kfb, k2, kfb,, k8
Rows 40-53 Knit
Row 54- k8, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k8
Row 55- k7, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k7
